Emotion and scent `create lasting memories`

Emotion and scent create lasting memories even in a sleeping brain, a new study has suggested. A team at the Duke University has found that the part of the brain that processes scents is indeed a key component of forming long-term memories, especially involving other individuals, a science journal reported. "We can all relate to the experience of walking into a room and smelling something that sparks a vivid, emotional memory about a family member from years or even decades ago. This research sought to understand that phenomenon on a cellular level," lead author Stephen Shea said. In their study, the researchers examined how strong memories are formed by creating new memories in the minds of mice while under sedation and monitoring their response to a memory-inducing stimulus afterwards, when they were awake. They created memories by stimulating the release of noradrenaline, a chemical present in the body during strong emotional events ranging from excitement to fear. The team then administered anaesthesia to a mouse and stimulated the release of noradrenaline with an electrode while wafting the scent of either food or the urine of another mouse under the nose. "In essence, we recreated the chemical reaction that would occur when the mouse experiences a social event, such as giving birth," Shea said.

A spy software to identify online paedophiles

A computer programme that can identify paedophiles, who pretend to be children on the Internet, is being developed by scientists at Lancaster University. By analysing language and syntax used online, the new technology can reveal if an adult is masquerading as a child as part of the victim "grooming" process. The scheme, known as Project Isis, will also be able to keep track of secret code words used by paedophiles as file names for child pornography. "The main technique is something called authorship attribution. Research has been done which indicates that there are differences in how people of a particular age group write," the Telegraph quoted Professor Awais Rashid, of Lancaster University, as saying. "You can distinguish when someone is 25 when they are claiming to be 14, for example. "The project uses a lot of artificial intelligence and a lot of algorithms. We are using language analysis tools to identify someone who is masquerading as a child, and therefore identify people who may be a risk to children. "We are looking at being able to monitor traffic in file-sharing networks to try to identify core distributors, who are of interest to law enforcement agencies because they have access to children and are preparing photographs of these children in abusive situations. "Paedophiles use very specific ways of marking these files and searching for them. "To the untrained eye they can look like innocent searches but with our analysis you can isolate them and study how they change," Rashid added. A first prototype system has already being devised and is being tested on non-sensitive data. The next step of the three-year project will be to use the software on real-life paedophile material provided by police and other agencies. If it proves effective, Project Isis could raise Internet privacy concerns. For it to work in practice, it would require a wide range of Internet sites such as chat rooms and peer-to-peer networks to be monitored for tell-tale paedophile language. "We are setting up a stakeholder ethics group of internet service providers, users and other groups who may have concerns about the ethics of monitoring," Rashid said.

Coffee can shrink the size of boobs

Here’s some bad news for ladies who can't get through the day without their coffee fix: the caffeine-fuelled drink can shrink the size of women’s boobs, a shocking new research has revealed. The beverage, which is best known for keeping people alert and sobering up drunks, has caused a stir by suggesting women who drink more than three cups a day could see their bra size drop. Tests by cancer researchers found half of all women have a gene linking breast size to coffee intake. Nearly 300 women were quizzed but Helena Jernstroem, of Lund University, said women should not worry too much. “Coffee-drinking women do not have to worry their breasts will shrink to nothing overnight. They will get smaller, but the breasts aren’t just going to disappear,” the Daily Star quoted her, as saying. “Anyone who thinks they can tell which women are coffee drinkers just from their bra measurements will be disappointed. “There are two measurements for a bra – the cup size and the girth, so you wouldn’t be able to tell,” she added. While caffeine may shrink women’s breasts, the reaction is the reverse for coffee-slurping blokes – it can make their “boobs” swell. On the plus side, the study showed regular hits of caffeine reduce the risk of women developing breast cancer.

Fatty acids in brain `can treat Alzheimer`s`

Here's some good news for those suffering from dementia -- a study has found that controlling the level of a fatty acid in the brain could help treat the Alzheimer's disease. Researchers have carried out the study and found that reducing excess levels of a fatty acid called arachidonic acid can mitigate memory problems and behavioural changes in those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. In fact, the researchers from the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease and the University of California have based their findings on an experiment on laboratory rodents, a science journal reported. They looked at fatty acids in the brains of normal mice and compared them with those in mice who are genetically engineered to have an Alzheimer's-like condition. They identified raised levels of arachidonic acid in the brains of the Alzheimer's mice. Its release is controlled by the PLA2 enzyme. They again used genetic engineering to lower PLA2 levels in the animals, and found even partial reduction halted memory deterioration. "The most striking change we discovered in the Alzheimer's mice was an increase in arachidonic acid and related metabolites (products) in the hippocampus, a memory centre that is affected early and severely by Alzheimer's disease," co-researcher Dr Rene Sanchez-Mejia was quoted by the as saying. Added lead researcher Dr Lennart Mucke: "In general, fatty acid levels can be regulated by diet or drugs. Our results have important therapeutic implications because they suggest that inhibition of PLA2 activity might help prevent neurological impairments in Alzheimer's disease. But a lot more work needs to be done before this novel therapeutic strategy can be tested on humans."

Tea, coffee key to a long life

Want to live a long and healthy life? Make sure you eat chocolate, and drink tea and coffee in moderation daily, says a leading nutritional scientist. Yes, according to Prof Gary Williamson of University of Leeds, chocolate, tea and coffee are among some key foods and beverages needed to live a long and healthy life, British newspaper 'The Daily Telegraph' reported. In fact, Prof Williamson has prepared a list of 20 "lifespan essential" foodstuffs -- all are rich in naturally occurring chemicals, known as polyphenols, which have been linked to a variety of health benefits, including protection against heart disease. And, these foods and drinks could also help to slow down the ageing process by helping to protect cells from the natural damage that occurs over time, he has suggested. Prof Williamson said: "Epidemiology studies support the protective effects of polyphenol-rich foods. Lack of these components in the diet because of low intake of fruit and vegetables, increases the risk of chronic disease. "This means that they are essential to fulfil the maximum individual lifespan, and so I propose that they are 'lifespan essential'. "Although they might not be essential for growth and development or the maintenance of major body functions, there is increasing knowledge concerning their potential for health maintenance or disease risk reduction throughout adulthood and during ageing." Even a recent study carried out by scientists in the US, Britain and Australia concluded that polyphenols can help protect against heart disease. Pulikali / Kaduvakali

Pulikali is a colorful recreational folk art from the state of Kerala. It is performed by trained artists to entertain people on the occasion of Onam. Pulikali, also known as Kaduvaakali, is a 200 year old art, carefully preserved by the artists of the state. Literal meaning of Pulikali is the 'play of the tigers' hence the performance revolve around the theme of tiger hunting. The folk art is mainly practiced in Thrissur (Trichur) and Palghat districts of Kerala. Best place to watch the show is Swaraj Ground at Thrissur on the fourth day of Onam, where Pulikali troupes from all over the district assemble to display their skills. The AppearanceStriking feature of this folk art is the colorful appearance of the performers. To get the semblance of a tiger artists paint themselves in bright yellow with patterns of black and red. A tiger mask on the face completes the get up.It is a painstaking job and artists spend a whole night prior to the performance day on their make-up. Patience of artists must be appreciated, as most paints contain toxic chemicals which create a burning sensation when applied on newly shaved bodies. The PlayIt is a wonderful sight to see humans in the guise of tigers roaming in the streets. Children, specifically take great delight in their performance as the entertainers dance, pounce and walk like a tiger. Scenes of tiger hunting goats and tiger being hunted by a human beings are also beautifully depicted by them. Beat for the dance movement is provided by percussion instruments like 'udukku' and 'thakil'.

Drawbacks of Apple iPhone

Here goes for the 24 Downsides of the Apple iPhone:

Although it has a 2 megapixel camera, you CANNOT record video clips
Although it’s being marketed as web device with the “real internet” with a “real browser” (Apple Safari), it DOES NOT SUPPORT FLASH, which is used on tons and tons of websites out there.
Although you can watch up to 10,000 videos on YouTube, you CANNOT VIEW ANY AND ALL VIDEOS FROM YOUTUBE.
Although you may be able to use Meebo or other sites as a work around for Instant Messaging, the iPhone DOES NOT SUPPORT INSTANT MESSAGING
Although it is an iPod, and although you can use a bluetooth headset for calls, the iPhone DOES NOT SUPPORT STEREO MUSIC STREAMING THROUGH BLUETOOTH HEADSETS, even if you have have the Jawbone or any other bluetooth headset capable of doing that with a A2DP supported phone.
You CANNOT LOAD YOUR OWN 3RD PARTY PROGRAMS onto the iPod. Classic Apple DNA, only proprietary, approved applications may be released by Apple (probably for a fee through iTunes!)
You won’t be able to sit in line and pull out your iPhone to play games, because the iPhone DOES NOT HAVE ANY GAMES. Games from the iTunes store are not compatible.
Although you can fill it up with 8 GIGS worth of mp3 songs from iTunes, you CANNOT CUSTOMIZE YOUR RINGTONES WITH MP3 SONGS
Although it has the “most advanced” interface using your fingers and the touch-screen, you CANNOT USE VOICE COMMANDS OR VOICE RECOGNITION OR VOICE DIALING.
The keyboard supposedly isn’t a real bother after you get used to it, but TYPING PERIODS AND COMMAS ARE A PAIN IN THE NECK, requiring you to go to a 2nd screen each time. Given that you use a period or comma in almost every sentence you type, this is NOT CONVENIENT.
Even though it has a 2 Megapixel camera, you CANNOT SEND PICS TO OTHER CELL PHONES VIA MMS PICTURE MESSAGING.
You CANNOT FREELY USE THE iPHONE ON OTHER CONTINENTS WITH SIM CARDS - you are restricted to AT&T international roaming networks only.
You CANNOT DOWNLOAD OR ACCESS ITUNES DIRECTLY from the iPhone, you always have to do it through you PC or Mac’s iTunes program and then sync files.
You CANNOT USE IT AS A MODEM like you can with the Samsung Blackjack and my Sony Vaio laptop.
The iPhone CANNOT GET REAL-TIME GPS MAPPING like you can on the Blackberry 8800 because it is NOT GPS enabled
You CANNOT GO ON VACATION OR ROAD TRIP WITHOUT YOUR CHARGER because it doesn’t have a removeable battery, so you cannot use multiple batteries as back-up or spare
You CANNOT LOAD MORE THAN 4GB or 8GB worth of video, music, audio, documents, contacts, email, etc because there is NO REMOVEABLE STORAGE CARD supported
The iPhone CANNOT SURF THE WEB AS FAST AS MOST COMPETITOR PHONES like the 3G Blackjack or Blackberry because it does not support 3G (i.e. The NYTimes Site took almost 1 full minute to download).
You CANNOT CONNECT TO ALL iPOD DOCKS AND CONNECTORS currently out there - most will work, and a upgrade may be in the works, but for now, you may have to buy yet another accessory to connect the iPhone to speakers, car radio, etc.
About connections, not all earplugs/headsets will fit into the jack since it’s reported to be a extra deep connection. Some accessory manufacturers are going to sell $40 adaptors just to get their standard earphone jacks to work with the iPhone properly. Be ready to add $40 to your purchase price!
You CANNOT WALK OUT OF THE STORE WITH A WORKING iPHONE - you’ll have to go home and activate it through iTunes.com
Since the iPhone DOES NOT HAVE A REMOVEABLE BATTERY, and the expected life is 300-400 charges, you’ll HAVE TO SHIP IT TO APPLE TO REPLACE THE BATTERY EVERY YEAR OR TWO just like iPods. Who wants to be separated from their smart phone for a week every year or two AND have to pay for it!
Intelligent keyboard and all, but you CANNOT COPY/PASTE ANYTHING! That’s called a sin of omission.
Oh yeah, you HAVE TO LITERALLY PAY AT LEAST $2196+ FOR THE iPHONE for your 2 year contract. That’s a lot for a cell phone, no?

Microsoft planning for End of Windows

Microsoft has started a new research project, Midori, to develop a software program that will help uncouple Windows from a single PC. The company has revealed that a decision to develop Midori was taken because Windows is unlikely to be able to cope with the pace of change in future technology, and the way people use it. "If you think about how an operating system is loaded, it''s loaded onto a hard disk physically located on that machine. The operating system is tied very tightly to that hardware," a privtae news channel quoted Dave Austin, European director of products at Citrix, as saying. He said that that created all kinds of dependencies that arose out of the collection of hardware in a particular machine, and raised concerns for Microsoft’s business in case Windows ends up being less important over time as applications become more OS agnostic A statement issued by Microsoft describes Midori as an ambitious attempt by Microsoft to catch up on the work on virtualisation being undertaken in the wider computer industry. Virtualising generally signifies creating a software copy of a computer complete with operating system and associated programs. It allows a reduction in the numbers of machines one needs to manage, and easy shifting to another machine in case one physical server fails. A virtual machine on a PC also enables very old applications, which existing operating systems would not run, to keep going. Many virtual machines these days are tuned for a particular industry, sector or job. "People take their application, the operating system they want to run it against, package it up along with policy and security they want and use that as a virtual client," said Dan Chu, vice president of emerging products and markets at virtualisation specialist VMWare. In such virtual machines, the core of the operating system can be very small and easy to transfer to different devices. Many believe that the idea behind Midori is to create a lightweight portable operating system that can easily be mated to many different applications. Michael Silver, research vice president at Gartner, said that the development of Midori was a sensible step for Microsoft. "The value of Microsoft Windows, of what that product is today, will diminish as more applications move to the web and Microsoft needs to edge out in front of that. I would be surprised if there was definitive evidence that nothing like this was not kicking around," he said. He further said that the big problem that Microsoft faced in doing away with Windows was how to re-make its business to cope. "Eighty percent of Windows sales are made when a new PC is sold. That''s a huge amount of money for them that they do not have to go out and get. If Windows ends up being less important over time as applications become more OS agnostic where will Microsoft make its money?" he said.

Secrets of suicide decoded

Canadian researchers claim to have found a clue as to why people commit suicide or go into deep depression. In a ground-breaking study, they found elevated levels of a particular protein in the brains of those, who committed suicide. An international research group, led by Michael Poulter at the University of Western Ontario and Hymie Anisman of Carleton University, found that the elevated levels of protein affected a particular gene that controls stress and anxiety. During autopsies, they found higher levels of that particular protein - affecting genes that control stress and anxiety - in the brains of those, who committed suicide, compared to those, who died of other causes. They said that these proteins caused chemical modification of the particular gene in a process called epigenomic regulation. This modification resulted in the shutting down or malfunctioning of that anxiety-controlling gene, impairing the individual's ability to handle stress and commit suicide. Researchers said that this particular gene plays a major role in regulating brain activity. ''The nature of this chemical modification is long term and hard to reverse, and this fits with depression,'' said Poulter. ''These observations open an entirely new avenue of research and potential therapeutic interventions,'' he added. The study was conducted as part of the on-going research in the new field of epigenetics that examines how gene expression changes.

Cell phones can cause cancer

The beloved cell phone - without which most people feel completely powerless - is actually a danger in disguise, says a leading health expert, who has called for limiting the use of the mobile phone because of its possible cancer risk. The director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Dr Ronald B Herberman, issued the unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff on July 23. The warning is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the US Food and Drug Administration. Herberman is basing his alarm on early-unpublished data. He said that it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes that people should take action now, especially when it comes to children. "Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," the China Daily quoted Herberman, as saying. In the memo he sent to about 3,000 faculty and staff, Herberman said that children should use cell phones only for emergencies because their brains are still developing. Adults should keep the phone away from the head and use the speakerphone or a wireless headset, he said. He even warned against using cell phones in public places like a bus because it exposes others to the phone's electromagnetic fields. A driving force behind the memo was Devra Lee Davis, the director of the university's center for environmental oncology. "The question is do you want to play Russian roulette with your brain," she said in an interview from her cell phone while using the hands-free speaker phone as recommended. "I don't know that cell phones are dangerous. But I don't know that they are safe,” she added.

baldness

There are on an average 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on the human scalp. Hairs grow from follicles that are sac like structures under the skin. At any time 90% of the hair are in the growth phase, which lasts an average of 4 to 5 years, after which it enters the resting phase, which lasts for 2 to 4 months. At the end of the resting phase, the hair falls out naturally and is replaced by a new hair. Some hair loss, 50 to 150 per day, is normal. What is baldness?Baldness or alopecia results when hair loss occurs at an abnormally high rate, replacement occurs at an abnormally slow rate or when normal hairs are replaced by thinner, shorter ones. What are the types of baldness?
Androgenic alopecia also known as male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. It occurs more frequently in men than in women. It is a permanent type of hair loss and occurs in a characteristic pattern on the scalp. The hair loss begins at the temples and at the top of the head towards the back, causing a receding hairline and a bald spot. Balding may begin at any age after puberty and can range from partial loss to complete baldness. Hormonal imbalance, mainly testosterone, and genetic factors are responsible for this type of hair loss.
Alopecia areata leads to patchy hair loss on the scalp. The exact cause is not known, but it is thought to be the result of the body’s immune system attacking the hair follicles.
Traction alopecia is caused due to long-term pulling on the hair. This is caused by certain hairstyles, such as tight braids. The hair loss is usually reversible once the cause of the pulling is eliminated.
What are the causes of baldness?
Heredity and aging.
Hormonal changes.
A serious illness or fever.
Medication such as cancer chemotherapy or too much Vitamin A.
Emotional or physical stress.
A self-induced reduction of hair by pulling it out (traction alopecia).
Poor nutrition.
Disease.
Childbirth.
Scalp Infection.
Hair Treatments and use of chemicals. How is the cause of hair loss diagnosed? The doctor first asks if there is a family history of baldness. He may also examine a few hairs under a microscope or check the scalp for signs of skin damage. Other questions related to the person’s diet, hair-care procedures, medications taken and recent illness, if any, may be asked. In some cases the doctor may order blood tests or a skin biopsy to help make a diagnosis. What are the treatment options in case of baldness?
Hair transplantationThis involves the transplantation of hair follicles from areas of the scalp where hair is still growing to areas where it is not. This carries a low risk for skin infections and may cause minor scarring in the donor areas.
Local application of drugsA drug called minoxidil, when applied to thinning areas of the scalp daily, is believed to be effective in preventing further hair loss and in growing new hair. The drug helps in dilating the blood vessels, thereby affecting the blood supply and the supply of hormones to those areas of the scalp that are losing hair. Another drug called finasteride taken in a pill form daily, helps in preventing further hair loss in most cases and growing new hair in some cases. The use of such drugs may help to reduce hair fall but it is generally seen that when the application is stopped, regrown hair fall out. Side effects such as irritation of the scalp are also quite common. Corticosteroids: Injections of cortisone into the scalp can treat alopecia areata. Treatment is usually repeated monthly. Doctors sometimes prescribe corticosteroid pills for extensive hair loss due to alopecia areata.
Cosmetic treatments Synthetic hair: A hairpiece can be custom made to cover a balding area. It is important not to neglect the scalp under the hairpiece, which should continue to be washed regularly. Another option is a weave, in which synthetic hair is sewn into existing hair.Hair products: Hair-care products that claim to thicken and straighten hair should be used with caution because most of the time they simply create an illusion of thickening, by building a layer of wax or oil.

Breast milk fights stomach infections

Infants who are extensively breast-fed for the first six months of life are less likely to have gastrointestinal problems. But, they're more likely to be deficient in iron, and therefore at risk of anaemia. Iron deficiency (ID) is prevalent among infants worldwide and a strategy to address ID is to feed iron-fortified formula, but this may create risk for gastrointestinal (GI) infection. To investigate the relationship between infant feeding practices, iron status, and likelihood of a GI infection in the first six months of life, researchers from Canada compared a formula-fed group of about 50 babies with 55 partially breast-fed and 49 predominantly breast-fed infants from birth through six months. The mothers were asked about the episodes of GI infections among their children. Blood samples of the infants at 6 months were taken to check for the iron status. It was found that 18 percent of the infants in the predominately breast-fed group had GI infections as compared to the 33 percent of the partially breast-fed or formula-fed infants. However, the predominately breast-fed infants were more likely to have low iron levels. While just 4 percent of those in the partially breast-fed or formula-fed groups had iron deficiency, 22 percent of the mostly breast-fed babies did. It was also found that breast-fed babies didn’t become anaemic if their cords were not cut too soon. Delaying the cut for as little as two minutes can help improve the baby's iron status.Despite the higher risk of iron deficiency and potential anaemia, the researchers recommend babies to be exclusively breast-fed during the first six months of life because iron deficiency is generally treatable with supplements while GI infections can be serious and even fatal.

Anti-HIV drugs boost survival by 13 yrs

Anti-HIV drugs have slashed death rates among people with the AIDS virus by nearly 40 percent since combination therapy was introduced in 1996, boosting their life expectancy by some 13 years, a study says. It is the biggest-ever assessment into the effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy -- the triple cocktail of drugs that suppress, but do not eradicate, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Publishing on Friday in the British weekly medical journal The Lancet, researchers report on 14 ongoing studies into more than 33,000 HIV-infected people living in Europe, Canada and the United States. These people started antiretrovirals in one of three phases -- from 1996-1999; from 2000-2002; and from 2003-2005. From 1996 to 2005, 2,056 patients died, but mortality fell by around 40 percent in the course of this period. Life expectancy at the start was 36.1 years but rose to 49.4 years at the end. "These advances have transformed HIV from being a fatal disease, which was the reality for patients before the advent of combination treatment, into a long-term chronic condition," says the paper. The team is headed by Robert Hogg, a professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. The study found that people who were treated earlier after infection and had a higher number of CD4 immune cells at the start of the therapy had a better life expectancy. Despite the greater overall survival chances, there remained a big gap in life expectancy between people on antiretrovirals and the general population, the authors found. In a rich country, an HIV-positive person starting the drugs at the age of 20 will on average live another 43 years, to the age of 63, while a non-infected person will survive to around 80, according to this data. The mortality figures culled in the study are not detailed enough to explain this discrepancy, the authors admit. Nor -- given most people with HIV are under 50 - are there yet any figures to compare survival among older HIV-infected people compare with non-infected counterparts. In high-income economies, a disproportionately high number of injecting drug users have HIV, where there is a higher risk of suicide or a fatal overdose. Australian AIDS expert David Cooper at the University of South Wales, near Sydney, said that the study was a useful pointer to people with HIV as to how long they could expect to live if they had access to the antiretroviral lifeline. Since AIDS emerged in 1981, the disease has claimed around 25 million lives and another 33 million are infected, some two-thirds of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Malayalam month Karkkidaka is known for big monsoon rains. It is the season when most people stay indoors, no farming work, and physique becoming weak. The whole environment wears a gloomy look and it is time for mental stress, lethargy and several problems.
Karkkidaka is the Month of Diseases and Deaths
This is the season where physical immunity of people is at its lowest. The mortality rate of society during this period is higher during this period than any other period.
Arthritis Care during Karkkidaka
It is known fact that arthritis pain increases during this season. The cold climate is the reason for this. Arthritis patients must take care of their normal diet. Wholegrain wheat food is the first choice for arthritis patients during Karkkidaka. Avoid meat -chicken, beef, pork.
Best Time for Ayurvedic Treatments
Karkkidaka (Cancer - July-Aug) is also the best time to perform Ayurvedic treatments, as human body will be more receptive to Ayurvedic medicines than at any other time of the year. The body absorbs anything applied to it, quickly and efficiently during this period.
This specialty of the month Karkkidaka was noticed by ancient Ayurveda acharyas and they suggested preventive and curative treatments for this season.

Massage Treatments for Karkkidaka Month

Body massage with medicated oil is the most important treatment. Ayurvedic medicinal oils prepared from herbs are boiled with coconut oil and applied on body parts below the neck. The choice of medicinal oil and extend of massage are selected according to the physical condition of the person.
The oil is left on the body for an hour. The oil is then removed by applying floored pulses and then rubbing away with EENCHA while bathing.
Both the massage and the bath thereafter are equally important. The water used for bathing has the juice of leaves of different herbs, boiled together. The persons who undertake this treatment also observe food restrictions for maximum effectiveness of the treatment.
Karkkidaka Kanji
This is specialized food specially directed for taking during the Karkkidaka month. It is essentially rice porridge and certain herbs suggested according to the physical conditions of the persons taking it. This is a preventive treatment, as it helps persons prevent the onset of diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, etc.
Suka Chikitsa
This is preventive treatment, given to healthy persons. Nasyam (nasal administration of medicines), Uzhichil (oil massage), vasti (enema), etc are the chief treatments.
General Guidelines to Better Immunity during Karkkidaka
The season makes you feel down. It is the season the earth and everything in it feels down. Observe the following things to stay healthy and to strengthen immunity.
Eat warm, easily digestible food items. Food items in liquid form preferred.
Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes.
Take an oil massage followed by a bath everyday.

Stubble is the way to win women's heart

Tried everything from designer clothes to expensive colognes but still not successful in winning your dream girl's heart? Well, then try growing stubble, for according to a new research, ladies are more smitten by men with stubbly chins than those with clean-shaved faces or full beards.

According to the study, which was conducted by Northumbria University researchers, stubble is the way to win a woman's heart. As for the reason, why women find men with stubble attractive: they find them tough, mature, aggressive, dominant and masculine - and as the best romantic partners, either for a fling or a long-term relationships.

The findings of the experiment, carried out on British women aged 18 to 44, could explain the appeal of actors such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt who cultivate their unshaven look.

The explanation for the preference is not clear, but experts in human evolution say that that facial hair may be a signal of aggression because it boosts the apparent size of the lower jaw, emphasizing the teeth as weapons. The research team believes that stubbly men may offer women the best worlds - not too strongly masculine, but mature and with the potential to grow a full beard.

The researchers carried out the study using computer technology to alter pictures of 15 men's faces so that they displayed different degrees of hairiness. Five levels of facial hair were used - clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard and full beard.

The pictures were shown to 76 women who were asked to rate them for masculinity, aggression, dominance, attractiveness, age, and social maturity.

They were also asked how desirable each man would be as a short-term or long-term partner. Faces with full beards were judged to be the most masculine, aggressive and socially mature. They were also thought to look five years older.

They were rated the least attractive and the worst choice for a short-term relationship. Men with light beards were considered the most dominant. Those with light stubble were rated the most attractive and as the ideal romantic partner for the short or long term.

Clean-shaven men finished bottom for masculinity, dominance, aggression, and social maturity, and they were the least favoured choice as a long-term partner. They came second-to-last for attractiveness.

'Facial hair, or beardedness, is a powerful sociosexual signal, and an obvious biological marker of sexual maturity. Facial hair may have been sexually selected by females on the basis of associated male success, despite its threatening appearance. Clean-shaven faces therefore may suggest appeasement, as well as being an obvious sign of sexual immaturity,' the Telegraph quoted the researchers, as saying.

"Increasing levels of facial hair were associated with increased perceptions of aggression, in that bearded faces were perceived as being the most aggressive, whilst clean-shaven faces were rated as being the least aggressive. And as facial hair increased in a linear fashion, so did female ratings of masculinity and dominance,' they added.

Weight Loss Diet Program

The following diet and health program was developed for employees and dependents of General Motors, Inc. and is intended for their exclusive use. This program was developed in conjunction with a grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It was field tested at the Johns Hopkins Research Centre and was approved for distribution by the Board of Directors, General Motors Corp. at a general meeting on August 15, 1985. General Motors Corp. wholly endorses this program and is making it available to all employees and families. This program will be available at all General Motors Food Service Facilities. It is management's intention to facilitate a wellness and fitness program for everyone.
This program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.
The effectiveness of this seven day plan is that the food eaten burn more calories than they give to the body in caloric value.
This plan can be used as often as you like without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter because you will be lighter by at least 10 lbs. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.
During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcoholYou must drink 10 glasses of water each day
Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

Day Two All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.
Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.
Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.
Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.
Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.
Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.
Tomorrow morning you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon, vodka, rum) is forbidden. Cream drinks are especially forbidden. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks. If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

G.M.'S Wonder Soup
The following soup is intended as a supplement to your diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.
28 oz, Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavouring as desired.

Additional Comments
Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil.
You have been given a recipe for the WONDER SOUP which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, calory etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.
Beverages you may consume while on the program :
Water (flavoured with lemon/lime if desired).
Club Soda is OK.
Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why It Works
Day One you are preparing your system for the upcoming programme. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature's perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.
Day Two starts with a fix of complex carbo-hydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.
Day Three eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.
Day Four, bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You're in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.
Day Five, Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colourless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five "quarter ponders". Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.
Day Six is similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.
Day Seven finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

Theyyam

Kerala, the land of charity, is rich in folk-culture, visual arts and festivals. Different religions, groups and communities in their historical evolution have subscribed to the growth of a dreamlike panorama of dance and visual art forms in this region.

Some of them are religious, highly ritualistic, but incorporate dance and music and colours and light. Even the geographical isolation of Kerala had not denied her the chance of inheritance of a common cultural heritage of India. As such the major developments in the cultural history of India had significant impact on the formation of organization of Kerala society. Although it is a compact cultural linguistic area, it was exposed to external influence both from land and the sea. The Aryan culture and the Sanskrit language nourished the indigenous tribal culture and language, defined and categorized by the scholars as Dravidian. The Buddhists, the Jains and the Brahmins had liberally contributed to the religious and social life of the country. Therefore the so-called Hinduism, the religion of the land, was characterized by much synthesis. This particular aspect could be traced in the traditional culture of Kerala.

The Theyyam or Theyyattam is a popular ritual dance of North Kerala, particularly now found in the traditional Kolathunadu, of the present Kannur and Kasargode districts. As a living cult with centuries old traditions, ritual and custom, it embraces almost all castes and classes of Hindu religion in this region. The term Theyyam is a corrupt form of daivam or God. It is a rare combination of dance and music and reflects important features of a tribal culture.
The indigenous Theyyam cult under the influence of the great classical Indian tradition incorporated new ideas and legends. However its form and content did not change very much. The earliest Brahminic settlements like Payyanur and Perimchellur (Thaliparamba) in Kolathunadu where the Brahminic religion was propagated through the institutions of temples largely influenced the popular folk religion based on Theyyam and other tribal cults. According to the legendary Keralolpathi, Parasurama sanctioned the festivals like Kaliyattam, Puravela and Deivattam or Theyyattam to the people of Kerala. He assigned the responsibility of Theyyam dance to the indigenous communities like Panan, Velan and Vannan. These traditions explain how the indigenous cults like Theyyam were incorporated and metamorphosed under the religious supremacy of the Brahmanism. In the long historical process a social system evolved in Kerala in which the little culture like Theyyam belonged to the depressed castes and classes where as the temple oriented culture belonged to the dominant castes and classes. There were no violent confrontations between these two cultures as there was no total destruction of the indigenous culture. “There can be no doubt”, say Bridget and Raymond Alchin, ‘that a very large part of this modern folk religion is extremely ancient and contains traits which originated ruing the earliest periods of Neolithic , Chalcolithic settlement and expression (The Birth of Indian Civilization 1968 p.3039)
Velan, on of the communities of Theyyam dancers, is referred to in the Tamil Sangam literature. According to Sangam tradition he was employed by the mothers of the love-lorn girls to exercise the malignant spirits from their daughters. He propitiated God Murukan to drive away the evils spirits by sacrificing a goat before a Kalam or Square made for this occasion. At the end of the ceremony he conducted a
dance known as Velan Veriyatal with a spear in his hand and prophesied the future happiness of the girl. The works like Tirumurukattuppatai, give descriptions of Velan’s Kalam, offering of chekki and oleander flowers with sacrificial blood, locations of performance like Manram, Podiyil, estuary (thuruthu), groves, forest, riverbanks and Kadamba tree. The main characteristics of such performances are traced in the contemporary Theyyam cult. Now all such rituals as described in some of the Sangam works and their commentaries are being observed by Velan and other dancing communities in the cult of Theyyam. Now the Velan community is divided into two groups known as Anjutton and Munnutton in Kolathunadu. According to tradition this division is based on the character of their offerings to the deity. The Munnutton section committed only three offenses (such offerings are offences to Brahmins) namely killing of cock, goat and buffalo, and the Anjutton (five offences) namely killing of cock, goat, buffalo, elephant and human being. Some of the Theyyam ritual songs describe that earlier the priest or the dancer had even sacrifices human beings in favour of the deity.
Ezhimala described in the Sangam literature and ruled by Udayan Venman Nannan is situated in Kolathunadu, near Payyanur. Therefore the Tamil Sangam culture with variations still continues in this region. The dance of Velan had taken new forms and developed into the present day cult of Theyyam over a period of 1500 years. This uninterrupted continuity of the Sangam tradition makes Theyyam a prominent religious system of north Kerala. As a religious and social institution it has significant place in the cultural history of region.

Under the impact of Aryan religions, the cult of Theyyam had changed substantially incorporating new trends and sub cults along with its tribal character.
In a different way, it can be stated that all prominent characteristics of a primitive tribal religious worship had widened the stream of Theyyam cult and made it a deep rooted folk religion of the millions. For instance, the cult of Mother Goddesses had an important place in Theyyam. Besides this, the practice like spirit-worship, hero-worship, masathi-worship, tree-worship, ancestor-worship, animal worship, serpent-worship, worship of the goddesses of disease and gramaadevata-worship are included in the main stream of Theyyam cult. Under the influence of Aryan myths and legends, a large number of Brahminical gods and goddesses had infiltrated as separate cults into Theyyam. Along with these gods and goddesses there exist innumerable folk gods and goddesses. Most of these goddesses are known as Bhagavathis as a matter of sanskritisation.
Different branches of Brahminical religion such as Saktism, Vaishnavism and Saivism now dominate the cult of Theyyam. However the forms of propitiation and other rituals are continuation of a historical past. In several cult-centers, blood offering is forbidden under the influence of Buddhism, Jainism and Brahmanism. In such centres separate places outside the outer wall of the shrine are selected for blood offering and preparation of the traditional kalam known as vatakkanvathil. The Theyyam deities propitiated through cock-sacrifice will not enter inside such shrines walls. This is a good example of a long-standing cultural synthesis of ‘little’ and ‘great’ cultures.
On account of the later origin of Vaishnavism in Kerala, it has no wide-spread influence on Theyyam cult. Only a few deities are available under this category. This may probably be due to the lesser influence of Vishnu on the village folk who had an uninterrupted tradition of the worship of Mother goddess for fertility and the god Siva and his son Murukan for protection and security even during the Sangam age. Two major Theyyam deities of Vaishnavism are Vishnumoorthi and Daivathar. Vaishnavism was very popular in Tuluva country during the 13th century under Vishnuvardhana of Hoysalas. He was a great champion of Vaishnavism. Most probably he was deified as Vishnumoorthi and propitiated in the Bhoota cult of Tuluva and then propitiated as a prominent folk deity in the Theyyam also. The legend of Vishnumoorthi is identified the God’s migration from Mangalore to Kolathunadu.
All other categories of Theyyam deities can be incorporated in Saivism and Saktism. Even ancestors, heroes, animals etc are deified and included in those categories. In brief Theyyam provides a good example for the religious evolution and its different stages in Hinduism.
The dance or invocation is generally performed in front of the village shrines. It is also performed in the houses as ancestor worship with elaborate rite and rituals
There is no stage or curtain and other arrangements for the performance. The devotees would be standing or some of them would be sitting on a sacred tree in front of the shrine. In brief it is an open theatre. A performance of a particular deity according to its significance and hierarchy in the shrine continues for 12 to 24 hours with intervals. The chief dancer who propitiates the central deity of the shrine has to reside in the rituals. This may be an impact of Jainism and Buddhism. Further after sun set this particular dancer would not eat anything as legacy of Jainism. His make-up is done by specialists and other dancers. First part of the performance is usually known as vellattam or thottam. It is performed without proper make-up or decorative costume. Only a small red headdress is worn on this occasion.
The dancer along with drummers recites the particular ritual song, which describes the myths and legends of the particular ritual song, which describes the myths, and legends of the particular deity of the shrine or the folk deity to be propitiated. This is accompanied by the playing of folk musical instruments. After finishing this primary ritualistic part of the invocation the dancer returns to the green room. Again after a short interval he appears with proper make-up and costumes. There are different patterns of face-painting. Some of these patterns are called vairadelam, kattaram, kozhipuspam, kotumpurikam, and prakkezhuthu. Mostly primary and secondary colours are applied with contrast for face painting. It had effected certain stylization also. Then the dancer comes in front of the shrine and gradually “metamorphosises” as the particular deity of the shrine. He, after observation of certain rituals places the head-dress on his head and dances. In the background folk musical instruments like chenda, tuti, kuzhal and veekni are played with rhythm. All dancers take a shield and kadthala (sword) in their hands as continuation of the cult of weapon. Then the dancer circumambulates the shrine, runs in the courtyard dances. The Theyyam dance has different steps known as kalaasams. Each kalaasam is repeated systematically from first to eight step of footwork. A performance is a combination of playing of musical instruments, vocal recitation, dance and strange makeup and costumes. The stage-practices of Theyyam and its ritualistic observations make it one of the fascinating theatrical arts of India.
